Flap Surgery

Periodontal flap surgery, or pocket depth reduction, is a treatment that, as the name states, is offered to help reduce the depth of the perio pockets. These pockets are between the visible gum line and the gum attachment to the root surface of the tooth, they indicate the level of gum health in your oral cavity. This treatment will help the gum reattach to clean root surfaces, and to reduce periodontal pockets.

During flap surgery the doctor will surgically expose the root surfaces, so that scaling and root planning is possible by direct vision. The calculus (tartar) covered and infected tissue areas will be debrided and the bone examined.

Occasionally, bone grafts and membrane grafts will be added simultaneously to rebuild the bone level.
